Tolerance is being able to accept the person for who he or she is. If there was no tolerance then there would be a lot. The author used tolerance through many characters in the book. The main three are atticus, Scout and Mrs. Dubose. The author shows tolerance in a lot of people.
The author establishes the theme of tolerance by “human behavior to innocence and experience, Kindness and cruelty, love and hatred humor and pathos. Also it shows tolerance in Scout because she’s always with boys and getting in fights with boys and she’s never with girls. Even at after school she hangs out with her brother. “Scout you aren’t old enough to understand something’s yet.” (Harper Lee) tell her all the stuff that happens because they treat her like a kid that she’s not able to understand things yet. They are also tolerance to her intelligence because if someone is talking she will get in there conversation and sometimes they don’t like her but they accept her differences.
Harper lee shows tolerance through Mrs. Dubose by making her mean and nasty. We learn tolerance from the way she acts. We find out she is going through a lot of pain. Then she dies. We learn that we should have tolerated her at the end. She died because of cancer.

Atticus was even tolerant to the ones that accused the black man, especially Mr. Ewell. He spit at Atticus when he went to the black man’s house drunk. Atticus just wiped the spit off his face with a napkin and left in his car.
